New Norvir
Mar 14, 2010

Is the new heat stable Norvir on the market yet? Is it exactly equivalent to the old med? Any idea if it's going to be more expensive. If so will the old version still be available or be replaced?

Response from Dr. McGowan

On February 11, 2010 the FDA approved the new heat stable Norvir Tablet. It has the same dose as the capsule (100 mg) and delivers an equivalent amount of medicine as the original. It does not require refrigeration. The company that makes Norvir has indicated that they will keep both the capsule and tablet on the market. Therefore your doctor must specify which you should be getting on the prescription. You should also alert the pharmacist as to which one you need to avoid confusion. In New York, the tablets have made it to pharmacies or can be ordered. Insurance companies may or may not have added it to their formulary yet so that will need to be check on an individual basis. In New York as of this writing, ADAP is covering it, medicaid is pending. I do not yet know if the cost will be the same as the capsule.

Best, Joe
