treatment in india
Feb 1, 2010

dear sir i want to know about treatment for hiv in india here some experts say's about the silver nano treatment it is success for maintaining cd 4 count

Response from Dr. McGowan

There is no scientifically proven evidence that silver (colloidal silver, phtyo-silver, etc) can treat or cure HIV or maintain CD4 counts. In addition, many of the preparations sold are impure and can contain aresenic and other txoic substances.

The US government has taken action against attempts to promote silver as a false treatment for HIV and other conditions (http://www.fda.gov/OHRMS/DOCKETS/98fr/081799a.txt):

"SUMMARY: The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is issuing a final rule establishing that all over-the-counter (OTC) drug products containing colloidal silver ingredients or silver salts for internal or external use are not generally recognized as safe and effective and are misbranded. FDA is issuing this final rule because many OTC drug products containing colloidal silver ingredients or silver salts are being marketed for numerous serious disease conditions and FDA is not aware of any substantial scientific evidence that supports the use of OTC colloidal silver ingredients or silver salts for these disease conditions."

The FDA has also moved to stop the marketing of certain silver containing products that make false claims to treat illness (http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2003/06/seasilver.shtm): "Today's actions are the latest part of Operation Cure. All, an on-going coordinated effort among the FTC, the FDA, Health Canada, Canada's Competition Bureau, and state Attorneys General to crack down on unscrupulous marketers who prey on consumers with serious illnesses.

The FTC has charged the two companies, their owners, the principal distributor, and a purported "expert" with making false and unsubstantiated claims about the health benefits and safety of a product they market called "Seasilver"- a purported cure-all liquid supplement. The FTC alleges that the defendants promoted Seasilver as safe and effective to treat or cure 650 diseases, including AIDS and cancers, and to cause substantial and permanent weight loss. The FDA has seized inventories of the product."

Therefore I would not recommend use of silver as an alternative or even complementary therapy for HIV or AIDS.

Best, Joe
