Is this safe?
Aug 17, 2009

I'm just wondering is taking the valproic acid( an epileposy drug) could help cure us? I was reading about the clinical trial they had on web md. Also, are there any interactions to be conserned with?

Response from Dr. Young

Hi and thanks for your post.

It's a long way from a preliminary clinical study to standard of care for HIV.

Valproate has generated some interest as a way to possibly eradicate HIV from infected cells; I wouldn't recommend its routine use at this time. Why take anything unless there is proven benefit? You'd only risk side effects or toxicity without clear-cut benefit.
