Re: Once AIDS, Always AIDS Jun 12, 2009 Why is a patient who has overcome an illness like cancer described/labelled as being cancer free, while a patient who has recovered from AIDS will always be labelled/stigmatized as having AIDS instead of being referred to as AIDS free? After all, a person's cancer can return after overcoming it. It would go a long way in decreasing the stigma of HIV/AIDS, as well as give a psychological boost to every HIV/AIDS patient, if such a change in terminology could be made by the medical authorities. The change would enhance optimisim to people who are combatting the disease that continues to paint a horrific picture to the world at large, while cancer, a disease not associated with sexual and/or drug risk factors, can now viewed in a much more hopeful light. |
