boils and staph
May 25, 2009

i had a boild under my arm it was not open it just looked like a bump. they cut it open and cleaned it out,but the said they were giving me meds for staph. do you know why? are do all boils have staph.

Response from Dr. Young

Hello,

Most boils are caused by Staphylococcus aureus infections.

Staphylococcal ("Staph") infections are common in the general population (including those living with HIV). Treatment can range from the simple incision, with or without antibiotics, or in severe cases IV antibiotics.
