Provigil
May 11, 2009

I was plagued w/ fatigue for many yrs. after chemo for AIDS-related lymphoma and HCV therapy (interferon and ribavirin) 2007 and 2008. Now Dr. has prescribed me Provigil 200mg daily ... and I feel great. Prescriber is AIDS internist. My HIV and liver drs. say it's "probably OK" What do you think? Thank you for helping us.

Response from Dr. McGowan

I have not used provigil in this type of setting. I am not aware of any data of the use of this drug on a chronic basis, say more than three or four months. I would not personally prescribe a psychoactive drug on any long term basis since it may lead to issues related to habituation and tolerance. I would ask your internist about long term use and any data to support this and any concerns related to dependency.
