| Bactrim May 7, 2009 My Doctors has prescribed Bactrim as part of my regimen. While I take my ARVs regularly, I have not been taking my Bactrim Meds as regularly as I was afraid of developing Kidney problems. What are the implications? |

Response from Dr. Young
Hi and thanks for your post. Bactrim is prescribed to persons living with HIV who have low (below 200) CD4 counts in order to prevent the very lethal Pneumocystis pneumonia. Usually dosed lower for prevention, kidney disease with this medication is unusual; in any event, kidney function should be routinely monitored in all patients. If I were you, and if my CD4 was below 200, this is a no brainer. PCP risk is far greater than the risk of kidney disease. BY | |||||||||
