 The TPHA test is a test for exposure to syphilis, the levels (called titers) will not change after treatment and this test should not be used to monitor response to treatment. It will remain positive for life after a single episode of syphilis. Other tests, called non-treponemal tests (such as the RPR or the VDRL) will go up with active infection and down after treatment. Occasionally they may also remain positive at a low level for life. If the titers of the RPR or VDRL have not decreased significantly (or have increased) by 6 months after treatment, then a second course of treatment may be needed.
