HAART & Lipitor
Apr 27, 2009

Hey Dr. Young,

Thanks for your time as always - great to have many outstanding sources such as yourself to run to to check things out!

My PCP just changed me from Zocor to 20 mg of Lipitor per day stating the latter is more effective at lowering bad cholesterol and fats. I assume that since he's precribed it for me and he knows precisely of my + status and the meds I'm taking (HAART combo of Truvada, Norvir, and Reyataz) this new drug is ok?

Thanks again Dr. Young!

Response from Dr. Young

Hello and thanks for your post. It's a pleasure to know that our service are of help.

Zocor is actually contraindicated with ritonavir (Norvir); by contrast it's generally ok to take Lipitor for the treatment of cholesterol while taking ritonavir-containing HIV regimens.

Make sure that you get to your routine follow up for clinical and laboratory monitoring. Should you develop muscle tenderness (one of the symptoms of muscle injury- something associated with statin use), be sure to let your doctor know.

Best of health to you, BY
