Hi Doc BY,
Greetings again from the Philippines.
I would like to ask if I am protected from PCP with pneumococcal vaccine?
| Response from Dr. Young
Pneumococcal vaccination helps prevent serious infections from pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumoniae). It does not prevent Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP).
On the other hand, certain antibiotic medications, such as trimethoprim/sulfa (Bactrim, Septra, Cotrimoxazole) or Dapsone do help to prevent PCP and should be given to all patients with CD4 counts less than 200.
I hope this helps. Be well, BY
