first regimen
Feb 22, 2008

hi doctor young iam HIV+ my lab results as follows vl= 31800 cd4 count=421 cd4% = 38 if u r my doctor when u suggest to start my treatment and what kind of regimen u will recommend? thanks in advance

Response from Dr. Young

Thank you for your post.

If you are entirely asymptomatic, with your normal CD4 count, percentage and average viral load, I would not strongly recommend initiating treatment.

Rather, I think that this is a great time to invest efforts into getting your preventative medicine issues (vaccinations, tobacco, mental health, heart/kidney/bone/liver health, etc) is top order.

Exactly which regimen to start is a matter of individualized decision making, rather than a one regimen fits all approach, in my opinion. Individualized means looking at the particular nature (ie genetics) of your virus and your background medical and family history (and in our clinic, HLA testing for abacavir hypersensitivity risk).

I hope this helps, BY
