| The Dentist Nov 28, 2007 Dr. Ben, I have a question regarding my dental cleanings. I am very happy with the treatment and care I am receiving. They always ask how I am doing, how my meds, cd4 / vl etc are doing and are genuine when asking. However, they say that they cannot use the Ultrasonic tooth cleaning system on me because of my status. Do you have any reasons why that would be? I think the hygenist said it was more for my safety than it was for theirs?? Just curious. I hate them using the pick axes on me and like the ultasonic removal of plaque instead.. Oh Ill live, but my nerves are shot after they are done. Just reminds me of my grandmother who was a Dentist always picking on me.. Thanks Dr. Ben.. Eric |

Response from Dr. Young
Hi Eric, Good to hear from you, as always. Dental care is an important component of preventive medicine for all persons, but especially HIVers. I agree that disclosure of one's status to your healthcare providers is very important. While I'm not a dentist, I'm not aware of any reason why the ultrasonic dental cleaner couldn't be used on you. If they have concerns about your safety, perhaps having them call your doctor may help with any confusion. Be well, BY | |||||||||
