meds and dirty drops
Nov 15, 2007

I have a client in a supportive living situation. He takes Sustiva and Combivir. He recently relapsed with Cocaine and Heroin. Now he must take urine tests regularly as a requirements to keeping his housing. He got into an IOP and has been clean for 10 days, but he still dropped dirty yesterday. He believes the meds keep it in his system (and fat cells)longer. He may be in jeopardy of losing his housing now. Has there been research on situations as specific as this? Thanks you in advance. Sally

Response from Dr. Wohl

Sustiva can yield a false positive drug test for marijuana on older drug test assays. If your client is turning up positive for heroin or cocaine, it ain't the HIV meds.
