26 and living with HIV

Oct 24, 2007

Im a 26 year old male. I have been living with hive for the past 8 years. I just recently got put on meds. I am now taking ATRIPLA. What i have been wondering is wat type of diet should i be on, if any.....

Response from Dr. Young

Thanks for your post.

There aren't any real dietary requirements for tenfovir/FTC/efavirenz (Atripla). There is a soft recommendation to not take the medication with a recent meal, since this can increase some of the efavirenz side effects, but this is not a strict issue.

Overall, my recommendations is to take your Atripla at bedtime, each balanced meals that are rich in fruits, grains and veggies and avoid too many supersized meals. Diet is this view, is part of a comprehensive strategy at improving health (exercise, diet, avoidance of tobacco, etc).

Hope this helps. BY
