changing iv irrigation in surgery if hiv patient
Sep 22, 2007

i am an OR nurse and i had a laparoscopic case in an HIV patient. i was changing the laparoscopic irrigatin bag when a small amount of fluid was spilled on my finger ( i had paper cut) and i wasnt wearing gloves, will that transmit hiv?

Response from Dr. Pierone

Unless the irrigation fluid was visibly contaminated with blood the risk of infection is negligible.

Here is a link for the PEP line for clinicians with questions about potential occupational transmission of blood-bourne pathogens.

Good luck!

with the merck vaccine out...what's left?
Should I take antibiotics for a sore throat?
