|lipodystrophy and sleep apnea
Aug 21, 2007
I have lipodystrophy with wasted facial fat and excessive fat beneath my chin - I previously had a buffalo hump removed. I had a sleep study done and learned I have moderate to severe sleep apnea. I've read that this may be related to the fat around my neck. The plastic surgeon I consulted said I needed to see an otolaryngologist, but did not say why. Why would I need to see an otolaryngolotist? Would this improve the likelihood that my insurance would cover part of the procedure to remove the fat from beneath my chin and around my throat?

Sleep problems related to patent airways involve mechanics of tissue/oral airway closure that generally are more in the area of expertise of an ENT specialist than a plastic surgeon who generally stay on the outside/skin side of the body's anatomy. KH
