First of all, I am sorry for my bad english, I am from Argentina. I found out this days that I have HIV. My question is kind of silly but for my it is important. What are the first steps that I have to take? I mean, besides to go to my doctor.
Response from Dr. Wohl
You are right, seeing a good HIV doctor is very important. She or he will check your CD4 cell count and your viral load. These will help the doctor to determine if you need medications to treat HIV or prevent infections.
You need to start taking very good care of yourself. You need to eat right, exercise, limit alcohol and stay away from illegal drugs.
If possible, share the news with someone you trust and who can be a support for you. You will need to be able to count on the help of a some one who cares about you. There may be support groups in your area - groups of people with HIV who come together to talk. If so, join.
Read. Read everything you can about HIV and its treatments. Use good websites that are backed up by evidence, not wishful thinking or unbelievable claims. Check out:

Lastly, you need to get used to condoms. They will protect you from other sexually transmitted diseases and protect your partners from also becoming infected with HIV.
