Does Altripla prevent HIV
Jun 23, 2007
I work in the medical feild and got a stick from a sharp instrument. It was an ear pick and not a needle. The doctors put me on altripla to prevent the lower the risk of hiv. Does it eliminate my risks and can I get hiv from an instrument thats not a needle??

Thanks for your post.
While not formally approved for this, the drugs in Atripla (tenofovir, FTC and efavirenz) should be as effective (and maybe better tolerated) as other post-exposure regimens (PEP). The use of PEP lowers but doesn't completely eliminate your risk of HIV transmission, but the actual risk depends on a lot of factors. I'd encourage you to search TheBody.com for other PEP information.
Best of luck, BY
