|How early would you start HIV medication?
Jun 17, 2007
Dr. Pierone, In a recent response, you indicated you would begin HAART much earlier than the current treatment guidelines. At what independent numbers or combination of numbers (absolute CD4, CD4 percentage, VL), would you start treatment? Thanks!
Response from Dr. Pierone
Please see my previous post regarding the danger of physicians injecting their own medical choices into their recommendations for their patients But in that post, I stated that if I had HIV infection, I would personally take HIV medications earlier than the guidelines suggest and listed the reasons for this decision. But to clarify, I would elect to take HIV medications unless by lucky chance my viral load was already undetectable. This decision would be contingent on my ability to tolerate medications. If it turned out I had side effects, then I would reconsider my options.
