dear doctor,

we are indian living in sharjah. recently my husband underwent medical examination for employment purpose and we came to know that his teat result showed sgpt high. he doesnt have any other problem. he doesnt smoke or drink alcohol.we are pure vegetarians. docotor adviced him to be on diet and do excercise. please do tell what is this sgpt and what are the ways to bring the level down. is this fatl? am really afraid please help.

SGPT is one of several tests of liver condition. In the absence of other liver test abnormalities, it's not clear if an isolated SGPT elevation is significant. Elevations in SGPT and SGOT are non-specific indicators of liver irritation or inflammation. There are numerous causes of liver inflammation, ranging from infections, medications, toxins (including alcohol) or tumors.

The best thing to do at this point is to have your doctors discuss all of the lab test findings with you. If in doubt, a repeat set of labs can help determine if the previous finding is significant or just a isolated abnormality.
