| HIV on Meds and Dengue Fever Apr 6, 2007 Hello, I have a the following question. I will be travelling to a country with dengue fever risk. I'm on HIV meds with a CD4s in the 400s. Will I be at greater risk of dying in case of dengue fever if infected, because of my low CD4s? Or is it fair to assume that my body would handle it like any other persons body? Thanks. :o) |

Response from Dr. Young
Thansk for your post. There's little information in the literature about HIVers getting dengue. The information that's out there are case reports that would suggest that HIVers with normal CD4s, to use your words, "handle the virus like any other person". Indeed, there are some theoretical discussions that prior dengue infection might actually lower HIV viral loads. Since many dengue-risk countries are my favorite travel locations, bon voyage.
