Empty stomach
Feb 4, 2007

i was recently put on Atripla(the one a day pill) i have had no side effect with this medication. all the literature i have read says i should take the medication on an empty stomach and before bed, what is risk that the effectiveness of the drug will lessen if i take my medication with food or on an empty stomach.

Response from Dr. Young

Thanks for your post.

Efavirenz (one of the medications in Atripla) can be taken with or without food without impact to effectiveness. When taken with food, efavirenz levels can increase in some persons, leading to an increased risk of side effects.

Hope this helps. BY
