My sister has fol lab results Previous HCV RNA Positive Viral Load 3x105 Copies Per ml Present HCV RNA Positive Viral Load 45734 IU Per ml? Please tell me what is this? Is there any improvement? Lot of regards

Response from Dr. Young

These labs indicate that your sister has active hepatitis C infection. The RNA positive tells us that she has virus (actually, a low level for HCV) in her blood.

About 25-30% of patients who have recently acquired HCV will clear the infection spontaneously, the remainder will have persistent infection. This situation can place the person at risk of developing liver disease later; there are effective treatments for HCV that can eliminate the virus from the blood and reduce the risk of liver disease.
