Gojo Berries (wolfberries) for HIV?
Jan 11, 2007

Hello again. I have been talking recently to my homeopathic doctor (who is HIV-) and she asked if I had considered taking Gojo Berries (wolfberries) as they are a particularly good immune stimulant. I have found information relating to non-medicated HIVers taking them with good results, but can find NO info anywhere relating to people who are on HAART. Are there any contra-indications? I know that some herbal medicines (echinacea and St. John's wort for example) are not to be used, but can you give me any guidance on using Goji berries? I am on Truvada and Sustiva. Thanks again for your response, encouragement and help. NB, UK

Response from Dr. Pierone

More recent studies on HIV pathogenesis suggest that immune stimulation is not a good idea for people living with HIV. Immune stimulation appears to trigger activation of macrophages and lymphocytes which are latently infected with HIV which in turn leads to viral replication and loss of these cells as well as others via an "innocent bystander" effect.

So I suggest we save the wolfberries for the wolves and strive for a quiet, harmonious, and non-stimulated immune system.

Thanks for posting and best of luck!

Restart with same regimen? What viral load is too high?
atripla resistance!
