Yellow Fever Vaccination
Nov 26, 2006

I had my Yellow fever jab on 14/07/98 and am travelling to Kenya this christmas. I am covered but have lost my Certificate and cannot locate the clinic where I had it to ask for a duplicate. How can I get a duplicate certificate? If I can't is it dangerous for me to have it again?

Response from Dr. Young

Thank you for your post.

Yellow fever virus can cause very serious, sometimes fatal infection. Other than vaccination, there is no treatment. The yellow fever vaccination is effective for 10 years, as such your vaccination in 1998 would still be effective; though you would definitely need to contact the clinic where you received the vaccine in order to get an official record.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention offers this information page that should be a useful guide. From their recommendation, "(p)ersons with an immunosuppressed condition associated with AIDS or HIV infection, or those whose immune system has been altered by either diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma or through drugs and radiation should not receive the vaccine. People with asymptomatic HIV infection may be vaccinated if exposure to yellow fever cannot be avoided."

You've not stated your HIV health status, but if your not experiencing HIV-related symptoms and your CD4 is above 350, you could likely receive the vaccination again without significant risk of complication.

Hope this helps. BY
