Dose ?
Nov 19, 2006

It used to be many medications ( not HIV) were based on bady weight and other factors. It seems that Antiretrovirals are dosed the same for anybody, regardles of weight, absorbition etc.. . How can a doctor prescribe a given dose regardless of the patients weight, meatbolism etc.. ? seems like the twice a day could be more , or less than a body can handle???

Response from Dr. Young

Thanks for your post.

Not all medications are dosed based on actual body weight (HIV or others). Indeed, for the majority of medications, the dosing is based on IDEAL body weight, rather than total, since the total amount of fat (or lack thereof) doesn't affect the concentration of drug in the blood.

Once- or twice-daily dosing has less to do with any single individuals weight or metabolism, but rather on the intrinsic characteristics of the drug itself. BY
