Is NNRTI class a MUST?
Oct 26, 2006

Is it possible to have combinations of only NRTI + PI instead of NRTI + NNRTI + PI?

I could not tolerate all the NNRTI pills, Rescriptor/delavirdine, Sustiva/efavirenz and Viramune/nevirapine.

Thanks.

Response from Dr. Wohl

Absolutely. There are no data showing any advantage of a regimen of all three classes versus the standard 2 NRTIs+PI or 2 NRTIs+NNTRI.

Triple class therapy only offers more toxicity.

See the current US Department of Public Health Guidelines at www.aidsinfo.nih.gov. You do not have to be a doctor to understand table 6a of these recommendations. You will see that there are quite a few PI based regimens that are used and effective.
