THE FLU SHOTS
Oct 25, 2006
I am HIV+ with a cd4 count of less than 200,I am on HAART regime.Yes my cd4 count is low but my doctor says that so far I have no side-efects,no OI's or TB,so for now Iam doing fine. I am on a combination of nevirapine/douvir, and I am taking my doses as plan and not trying to miss a beat, also let me say that I am from The Bahamas and I think we have one of the best HIV/AIDS regiments in the Americas. In fact ALL medications and testings are free of charge to all citizens,Mr.Bill Clinton Foundation is a huge sponsor to our HIV/AIDS center. So I am only adding my 5cents(sense)(smile)to this great forum, and to let you guys know there are some real efford on behalf on some countries to try to eradicate the scrooge of this disease, so to my country and to those who are trying to uplift their citzens I say GOD BLESS.My question is should I get a flu-shot or is this not o.k. for me at the time, the winter season is fast approaching? The flu shot is giving free to all citizens who are not in good health, so should I get one?
Response from Dr. Young
Thanks for your post from the Bahamas.
It's good to hear that people in your beautiful country are getting access to antiretroviral medications. If only all persons living with HIV had such access- even American citizens are not guaranteed HAART.
To your question, yes, I recommend influenza vaccinations to all of my patients with HIV, recognizing that the effectivness of the vaccination may be decreased somewhat in persons with lower CD4 counts.
Best to you, BY
