is it advisable for one who had not tested positive to take HIV Meds, i.e the Antiretroviral Drugs?
Response from Dr. Wohl
Why would you want to take HIV meds? Even people with HIV many times don't want to take these medications. Is the idea is to take something to help prevent acquiring HIV? This is a hot topic right now and raises many important issues about the effectiveness of such an approach, the risks of side effects and drug resistance and ethics.
Suffice it to say that there is evidence that tenofovir can be taken prior to risky exposures safely. Data on efficacy are forthcoming. Certainly, the best protection from HIV during sex is a condom but for those who can't or won't use condoms HIV drugs may turn out to be an answer.
