VRC launching therapeutic HIV vaccine
Aug 30, 2006
Hello Dr.pierone, i have a question that's been on my mind for a while now and i would appreciate a LOT your expert's opinion on it... The VRC (vaccine research center) just recently started using a prime-boost approach to illicit a killer T-cell response in HIV infected individuals (DNA Prime and Adenovirus boost). Now even though they're still in phase 1 of testing, do you think, from your knowledge of the HIV life cycle and how it affects the immune system, if this approach, already being tested in the same exact way in HIV uninfected indivudual (phase 2) will prove efficacious at controlling the infection of HIV-positive folks? Thanks a lot.an AFFECTED individual
Response from Dr. Pierone
Hello and thanks for posting. Here is a link to the VRC and the trials that are underway there. This therapeutic vaccine study that you mention is included on this list. . This is a very early study which is designed to see if this vaccine stimulates an anti-HIV immune response in infected individuals. There is no way to know if this vaccine will work until it is tested, but research of this nature is critical to move the science of therapeutic vaccine forward.
