| Micronutrients and HAART Aug 17, 2006 Hi Dr. Young, What's your take on Dr. Kaiser's new study in JAIDS that show micronutrients along with HAART improve T-cell counts over HAART alone? The MN are expensive, and I tend toward a healthy dose of skeptisism. Any thoughts? http://jaids.com/pt/re/jaids/abstract.00126334-200608150-00001.htm;jsessionid=Gj4J2XVx2G7b3Cl921Hgwdp1dlb1hhgT1TLrBFnFcT1vbs1cghrj!869285401!-949856145!8091!-1 |

Response from Dr. Young
Thanks for your post. I too am a skeptic. Let's be clear, micronutrients alone haven't shown significant benefit. I'd also like the study (as I do all studies) to be independently replicated before concluding the validity of the conclusions. Given that all the patients in the Kaiser study were receiving HAART, it's not clear if there's a clinical benefit to an additional ~60 CD4 cells. If cost or pill number is an issue, I'm not sure that I'd be putting my basket into MNs. Intriguing nonetheless. BY | |||||||||
