 Thanks for your post. In the US, pregnant HIV-infected women should receive triple drug therapy. The US Department of Health and Human Services have provided guidlines for HIV treatments during pregnancy. Most recommend the use of an AZT-containing regimen with a protease inhibitor (often nelfinavir or lopinavir/ritonavir) in therapy naive patients. Efavirenz (Sustiva, Stocrin) should not be used, especially in the first trimester because of risk of birth defects. Treatment should alway be guided by resistance testing, as recommended by the DHHS. Whenever possible, such patients should receive healthcare from a specialist who is familiar with the issues of prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV (pMTCT). Appropriately selected and adhered to treatment essentially eliminates the risk that the child will acquire HIV. BY | ||||||||
