6 weeks positive - what treatment?
Sep 7, 1999

I am newly diagnosed positive (6 weeks from contact)- I am a professional living in Australia (major city) money is not a problem - I want to LIVE and LIVE LONG - I will never pass this dreaded disease to anyone - I am willing to wake up in the middle of the night to take medication - I have no allergies to any drugs that I am aware of - I don't smoke and recently given up drinking, I don't use drugs - what is your recommendations?

Response from Dr. Cohen

The recommendation is to get in touch with one of the many HIV experts in Australia and review your options as soon as you can. There are several names of MD's in Australia that have internationally recognized for their insight into ways to approach this. And there are many others who are locally well recognized for their dedication and contribution to care. You should be able to see any of them in the next week or two I would think. I don't know what city you are in - the ones I know of are mainly in Sydney but there are others elsewhere. I would think if you need a referral there would be HIV support networks ready and willing to give you suggestions.

You might want to move on this fairly quickly - since as we have discussed here - there is some reason to think that treating within the first several months after exposure might allow some added benefit to treatment - preserving the very cells that are able to recognize - and maybe some day control - HIV itself. They are the first to usually be attacked and destroyed in these first several months - so treating soon might help preserve these cells.

As for what to take - we have answered that many times here - so I invite you to read other answers about what to start on. There are also summaries on this web page about treatment issues - including an overview of the many options that are worthy of consideration. There is no one best combination - there are several that have good reasons to be selected. That process - of reviewing options and choosing one - is done best face to face, one to one, with a chance for you to ask whatever you need to ask.

Good luck. CC
