Advice Please
Jul 7, 2006

Doc, I have a T cell count of just over 700 but developed ohl and floaters within a few months of being infected over two years ago. Does this put me as a fast progressor to Aids with these two infections? I am on no meds at this point. I read things that tell me ohl means there is less hope to survive this disease for any length of time. Can you clear this up for me?

Response from Dr. Young

Whoa, pony.

Sounds you're in need of some good medical advice. Getting medical confirmation about oral hairy leukoplakia and the cause of your visual disturbances is the first thing to do. (FYI, floaters aren't necessarily infections.)

I'm not sure where your getting your information, but OHL shouldn't impact your prognosis in any way.

So, take a deep breath, talk to your doctor about your symptoms. If your having visual changes, I'd have an ophthamologist do a careful retinal examination.

Your progression to AIDS has much more to do with your CD4 count and viral load (and to a lesser, but important extent, hepatitis virus infection).

Best of health to you. BY
