Ziagen & Alcohol
Sep 16, 1999

Following a modest increase in viral load, my medications were changed to Ziagen, DDI and D4T. I don't imbibe much but occasionally enjoy a glass of wine, a beer or a brandy (at most 3-5 drinks per week). At this level, are there any interactions between alcohol and Ziagen? Should I not drink at all while taking Ziagen or should I just not drink within an hour or two of taking each Ziagen dose?

Tom

Response from Dr. Cohen

Hey Tom -

it likely doesn't matter much. While there is some metabolism of ziagen by the enzyme that also processes alcohol - there is no clear reason to avoid alcohol while on this med. There were studies that did go up to doses twice as high as the standard amount of ziagen/abacavir -- and there was no important increase in side effects - so that even if you occasionally had a higher blood level of the ziagen as a result of any alcohol - there wouldn't be any expected problems from it.

Brandy? Really, people still drink brandy??
