how to gain weight

I have a relative who is hiv positive and is losing weight rapidly - age 52 and now weights 40kg. how can she put on more weight. she is not taking any medication at the moment

Rapid weight loss in a person with HIV is very concerning for the posibility of an opportunisitic infection or other AIDS-related complication. At the very least, it's suggestive of AIDS-related wasting.
The essential thing at this point is a careful medical evaluation to look for the possible cause(s). Knowledge of the CD4 cell count is also important-- if your relative's CD4 count is low, starting on HIV medications often helps.
