A positive HIV test in someone with no obvious exposure is certainly unexpected. One always wonders about a false positive test result. When you say the viral load was very low do you know what the number actually was and was it confirmed?
The prognosis for someone newly infected with HIV is excellent normal or near normal life span - as long as they have access to HAART and the life skills which are needed to maintain high-level adherence to therapy once it becomes necessary. Protected sex is effective in preventing transmission to an intimate partner. Kissing is fine as long as there is no active oral bleeding or sores.
The latest developments on the pharmaceutical front are Integrase inhibitors. These agents are in phase II and III studies and will be used first for patients with drug resistant virus. There is also a one pill, once daily combination tablet of Sustiva, Viread, and Emtriva which should become available later this year.
If you have more specific information please feel free to repost. Best of luck to you and your daughter!
