Hep C After Liver Transplant
Mar 2, 2006
My husband received his life saving liver/kidney transplant. My husband has Hepititis C, which was never treated before transplant. I have been hearing about genotype. What is the genotypes of Hepititis C, and why do they make a differanced. Could you please direct me to some good information concerning Hepititis C.
Thank you and God Bless. Roberta

Thanks for your post. There are several different hepatitis C genotypes-- lets simplify and call them 1,2 and 3. The reason that these are important is that different HCV genotypes responde differently to HCV treatment. Type 1 genotypes tend to respond less well, whereas non-1 genotypes have the best responses to current treatments.
You didn't mention whether your husband has HIV coinfection or not, but double infection tends to accelerate the rates of disease progression for either virus. Managment of the coinfected patient can pose some additional challenges.
There are many web-based references on HCV. I'd recommend surfing our site, TheBody.com to start, but then, I'm biased.
With best wishes for you and your husband, BY
