slow release meds

Feb 1, 2006

Any chance in the near future there will be implantable meds that deliver a constant therapeutic dose of HIV medication over many months to help with the adherence issue?

Response from Dr. Young

I'm not aware of any programs to develop anything more than once-daily medications at the moment. The problem with longer acting drugs is that (especially while in development), longer acting drugs can mean longer acting side effects. This is part of the reason why there's reluctance to try to find such drugs, in general, and with regard to HIV. BY
