HIV Newly infected - what should I do now ?
Jan 20, 2006

Besides going for CD4, viral load, hiv resistance test. What should I do now? I did HIV test every six months, last april 05 was negetive and November I tested positive. Help advise. Thanks

Response from Dr. Young

Sorry to hear about your post.

For newly diagnosed patients, I try to spend a lot of time in education about the natural history of HIV disease, treatment strategies (side effects, options), prevention of transmission. After that, there's plenty of preventive medicine issues to take care of-- vaccinations for pneumonia, influenza, hepatitis A and B; discussions about lowering the risk of cardiovascular and lung disease (smoking), drug use, etc.

Other lab tests to do relate to these later issues-- hepatitis antibody tests, kidney function (creatinine, urinalysis), screening for other STDs (gonnorhea, syphillis, chlamydia).

Lastly, this is a time to find a experienced HIV doctor and to develop good communication skills and habits with your healthcare providers, case managers and family.

Good luck, good health to you. BY
