appetite enhancer for a cancer patient
Jan 11, 2006
Hello. I know 2 people who are struggling to maintain their weight because of their fight with cancer. Neither have an appetite and they are both losing their taste buds. Can you reccomend prescription or alternative methods to enhance appetite and or food taste?
Response from Dr. Young
There are a couple of products that are FDA-approved and work well for anorexia in HIV/AIDS patients-- they also work well in patients with cancer. Megestrol (Megase) is a steroid (usually elixir) and dronnabinol (Marinol) the active molecule in marijuana both have worked very well in my HIV patients with difficulty with their appetites. BY
