Hi Doctors. It has been 3 years since the start of the SMART study. Just wondering if there are any preliminary results on the success of treatment breaks?
Response from Dr. Pierone
There is a data safety monitoring board (DSMB) that reviews the outcome data on a schedule and if one arm of the study is shown to be superior they have the option of halting the trial. So far they have indicated that it is safe to forge ahead with the study. So if there are differences between the two arms, they are not yet significant enough to prompt action from the DSMB.
From my perspective as an investigator (we have about 65 patients on the study) our patients in both groups are doing equally well.
