ARV treatment after shingles?
Aug 27, 2005

I was diagnosed in 2004.Two months ago i suffered from Herpes Zoster and my cd4 was 394 and VL 13000.Can i start ARV's????Pls help

Response from Dr. Pierone

Varicella Zoster virus is the same virus that causes chickenpox in children and can reactivate later in life as dermatomal zoster. This is a blistering skin outbreak that typically involves the path a nerve to the skin. Varicella zoster virus remains in the body (location - nerve roots) in a dormant state for decades after primary infection. This virus is more apt to reactivate in people with HIV because the immune system is responsible for preventing the virus from reactivating. Hence, reactivation of this infection does represent a HIV-related complication.

So even though your numbers don't meet the current threshold for HAART initiation, there really should be no problem with you starting treatment now if you are ready. Hope this helps and thanks for posting.
