Response from Dr. Wohl
There is no cure for HIV infection yet. A major problem has been the difficulty in eradicating the virus from cells that are infected but are very inactive. Such cels may harbor the virus silently for years adn not be touched by current HIV medications that rely on cell replication. As you may have heard there has been some thought provoking news regarding the ability of a popular epilepsy medication to help turn cells 'on' so that their hidden HIV becomes vulnerable to HIV therapy. These are very early data and more studies are planned but the authors believe their success in lowering hidden virus levels in 3 patients is an idication that it is possible to reach this pool of HIV-infected cells. We shall see. DW | |||||||||
