lifetime treatment?
Jun 3, 2005

Is there any long term treatment for CMV specifically that is both safe and can keep viral levels down?

Response from Dr. Wohl

As we do not have a CMV forum, I field this one.

For people with CMV disease (that means organ damage from this virus such as destruction of the retina of the eye) valganciclovir can reduce the level of the virus in the body and prevent further damage from the virus. The drug is oral. It can lower blood counts such as red blood cells.

The best way to keep CMV at bay is to get the immune system cranked up with effective HIV therapy.
