Flu and Protease inhibitors
Apr 5, 2005

H5N1 Bird Flu may be treatable with Kaltera. http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=healthNews&storyID=2005-03-01T162045Z_01_B682054_RTRIDST_0_HEALTH-BIRDFLU-AIDS-DC.XML

What other Protease inhibitors may work against a pandemic Flu? Could children be safely treated with these drugs?

Response from Dr. Pierone

This article raises the possibility of studying protease inhibitors for bird flu, but does not present any data. The article mentions the similarity of H5N1 influenza virus to the SARS virus and that Kaletra might have some activity against SARS. Thus, protease inhibitors might have activity against H5N1 influenza. Yikes, what a stretch.

We have established agents like osteltamivir (Tamiflu) with proven activity against H5N1 influenza and many countries are stockpiling this drug in case this virus goes global.
