?Stress or HIV Related?
Apr 1, 2005

Hello Dr. Young If someone was infected 6 months ago..Could it be possible to be symptomatic to the tune of: Swollen Receeding Painful Gums, Mouth Ulcers, Dry Burning Eyes, Chronic Inflamed Nasal Cavity, Red Bumpy Rash spots covering calves and nose, Painful Thumb Joints, Muscle Aches?

Is this considered Symptomatic HIV Ifection, or is something else causing this?

Everything read so far say symptoms do not surface for years, if not a decade.

Are these symptoms common or consistent with early HIV or just stress related?

Have you ever heard of this progression, if so, how prevalent is it?

Can AIDs occur within one year?

My friend is beside himself....It's bad enough to have HIV, but to deal with such extreme symptoms so early is too much to deal with.

Thanks for ALL you do

Response from Dr. Young

Thanks for your post.

While it can be difficult to ascertain the cause of symptoms by web, one thing is for sure-- your friend does have adverse symptoms.

Stress can certainly be caused by the knowledge of HIV infection alone, never mind the activities of modern life-- the symptoms hat you've described can, in part be due to this.

However, it would not be surprising to me that the symptoms are among the poorly-described consitutional manifestations of HIV. It would be useful to know your friends' CD4 cell count in this discussion.

In either case, getting a detailed medical evaluation, and perhaps, consideration of starting HIV treatments may be in order.

Thanks for posting. I hope this is helpful. BY
