Dr. Young,

I read a past post of yours where someone asked if they could have a high WBC (14) during ARS. You answered 'Yes'. All the reading I do says it would more likely be low. Can you just elaborate on your 'yes' answer?

Thanks, Jack

Response from Dr. Young

Jack- Thanks for your post.

Both answers are correct-- many patients with acute viral illnesses have a low WBC count, others can have an elevated count. The point is that an abnormal WBC count is not diagnostic, it's simply abnormal and should direct further laboratory investigation in the right clinical setting.
