L-carnitine
Feb 12, 2005

Dear Dr., What if anything have you heard about L-carnitine treatments for hiv+ individuals.

Response from Dr. Pierone

There was an interesting study of acetyl-l-carnitine (ALCAR) for HIV-related peripheral neuropathy that was published last year. In this pilot trial there was evidence on nerve re-growth in response to treatment with ALCAR. Mitochondrial toxicity is thought to underlie some of the metabolic complications seen in HIV infection and peripheral neuropathy as well. Carnitine is believed to mitigate mitochondrial toxicity though its anti-oxidant properties. Further studies are being done with various forms of carnitine to see if they are beneficial for some of the HIV-related metabolic complications.
