Diet restriction

Jan 23, 2005

which are the diet restriction during the anti-viral treatment of HIV.

Response from Dr. Young

Thanks for your question.

There are a variety of dietary and drink restrictions for HIV medications-- two medications require fasting (no food 2 hours before and 1 hour after the dose)-- the nucleoside ddI (Videx, Videx EC) and the protease inhibitor, indinavir (Crixivan). Many medications are must taken with food for optimal drug potentcy, including most protease inhibitors (like nelfinavir (Viracept), Kaletra, atazanavir (Reyataz). Most other nucleoside drugs and the new protease inhibitor, fosamprenavir (Lexiva, Telzir) don't have any dietary restrictions.

The way that I look at it, dietary and drink restrictions are yet another way that HIV or it's medications impacts the way that HIV+ persons must accomodate their lifestyle to the disease. The ideal medications are ones that can be taken without regard to when you ate.
